This week, I am beginning to really feel the time and how little of it is left.
There was more filming to be done, so I continued with that. I also arranged the interview with Niamh for Tuesday (tomorrow) with additional consent from parents. I sent her the questions to prep and will go tomorrow to complete that shoot.
Once done, I only need the interview with Aeracha Uladh and a few B-roll shots of Joe.
Cinematic B-roll with the low sun and shadows...
I attended the senior team's training session on Friday evening and filmed beautiful cinematic b-roll. The image above is an example.
I imported all of this onto the existing project and completed a review of all clips, selecting what portions I wanted onto a sequence called B-ROLL GV'S. This means I can jump back to this sequence and pop in the best shots as b-roll over the a-roll timeline.
Teamwork...
I also went to Ballycastle with a classmate to assist with their interview with Orfhlaith Campbell. She even tweeted about us.
This was a fantastic experience. The subject matter is one I am very interested in, and to speak to an expert on the matter was an opportunity you don't get every day.
I was on the second camera for this shoot and helped overall with the production.
Gio and I have assisted each other on our individual films, which has led to a great working relationship. We hope to continue making documentary films beyond graduation, an outcome I had not expected but am excited about!
Here is a screenshot of my camera on Gio's project:
The Edit...
As mentioned above, the edit continues. I am now honing in on the narration and what I'd like said around the contributors voices. Joe, Niamh, and Aeracha Uladh will definitely tell the main points, but I want a poetic element to the production.
I love that the pitch sits on a hill and that people drive past it everyday. This led me to doing some research on Irish poetry on a hill or music of some sort. I found a song and I thought it suited the tone perfect (see below). However, when I enquired for a license it was £1500, something I simply do not have. The song I wanted :(((
I will continue looking for something that adds that poetic tone, but until then, it's working on the overall narrative.
Outside of narrative, I considered technicalities with post-production. I watched several YouTube tutorials (listed below) and this helped me to make the best decisions for my film AND my workflow more efficient.
Firstly, I considered resolution and timeline. Most of my footage is 4K, so I have set my timeline up for 4K and any 1080p will be "Set to frame size" and scaled by Adobe for export.
Secondly, I watched videos on keyboard shortcuts. I changed certain shortcuts and learned important ones so I can make quick decisions in one button rather than using the mouse to make several clicks. This was a game changer and my editing has been so efficient and fluid.
I also looked into specific cuts used in filmmaking. I have seen these before but I thought a refresher would do no harm.
The Questions...
For Niamh's part, I want her to bring a younger voice to the story. To fill in some gaps that Joe might have missed? Thus, I compiled the following questions:
Who are you? What's your link to the pitch?
Could you tell us your thoughts on the pitch and what it does for the community?
Do you think if the pitch didn't exist, it would have had an impact on the area?
As a teacher, do you see a difference in the children involved in community sports/activities?
As a Gaeilgeoir, what does it mean to you to have a place on your doorstep for Irish culture?
What does all this mean to you and your team?
Do you think pitches like this help young children with acceptance of others different from them? (marginalised communities) And will that help future generations and the peace in this country?
Niamh is fluent in Irish, so her segment will most likely be in Irish with transcription for the edit. I do not speak Irish, so this will be discussed (can Niamh transcribe).
Some questions might not be asked on the day depending on how the interview goes, as Niamh might cover the point (although if in Irish I will not know that).
The main point I want Niamh to bring is what it means to children in the community and how that impacts the future. Niamh not only coaches the youth team but she's also a teacher in the community, so she has a great perspective to be heard on this. She is of my generation's age (just pre-good Friday agreement), so it's also interesting to hear what we have to say as the first generation of children to grow up in "peaceful" Northern Ireland.
Twenty-three days to go... filming still being completed alongside the edit AND dissertation first draft still to be completed. I am arguably cutting it fine, but I chose to wait for the weather and that's delayed things. I believe I can do it all on time and might feel a little stressed, but excited!!
